This week I had the honor of attending the 2017 Pepperpot Awards for the Philadelphia Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The Pepperpots honor and recognize pubic relation campaigns from the Greater Philadelphia. With 100 entries over 25 categories, my graphic design work for Trinseo's 2016 Annual Report was selected to win an award. Thanks to the graciousness of my client liaisons, Donna St. Germain and Natalie Yuengel (as well as the overnight "kitchen pass" approved by my lovely wife), I was able to attend for the second year in a row.
Beauties and the Beast. Trinseo's Donna St. Germain and Natalie Yuengel, and me.The event was held at the upscale Down Town Club in Philadelphia where I hobnobbed with wordsmiths and spin doctors who are experts at social interactions and dress like the pages of The Great Gatsby. The evening was filled with great food, free drinks, and warm receptions. Considering that I work over 40 hours a week alone in an office suite surrounded by mental health therapists and a Yoplait Yogurt Sales Director (a self-proclaimed "Yogurt Slinger"), I was excited to mingle with creative talents and step outside wearing something more professional than jeans and an Incredible Hulk T-shirt.
At the end of the evening, we walked away with warm buzz, a belly full of tasty hors d'oeuvres, a list of new contacts and the second place "ladle" for the 2016 Annual Report. As a hard-working professional and self-doubting person, it's hard not to be a bit bummed about not being "the best". We designers, artists, writers and creatives have to remind ourselves that this is a subjective field with a myriad of tastes. What we do shouldn't be about regional awards or national accolades - it should be about making our clients happy. If you do that, you will be a winner every time.
Thank you again to the team at Trinseo for the opportunity to tell your story. I will take these smiling mugs to a pot of pepper any day....
Until Next Year,
